After watching the Youtube video of Rep. Alan Grayson giving a scathing, albeit short, summary of the Republican health care reform plan, I admit a little shiver of pleasure ran down my spine. I then realized that it wasn't the first time in recent memory I had such an unusual reaction to political rhetoric. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York caused just such a reaction when he slammed CNN's Maria Bartimoro on Medicare.Liberals have rightfully been pigeonholed as passive aggressive. I detest that stereotype if for no other reason than I do not fit into it. When I hear a politician speak on the issues, I want to hear articulate, quick-witted, and yes, blunt responses. Let's be honest, there really is such a thing as a stupid question. Answering such questions is not being kind and thoughtful, it is disparaging and insulting to those of us listening who can actually think. If you are answering stupid questions, you are lending such questions - and the questioner - credence. Knock it off. Better yet, take a page from Rep. Barney Frank. If that isn't a logical enough reason for you to get real, consider that the recent trend of Democrats showing their teeth is - dare I say it? - sexy. Men and women alike love a good sneer. Why do you think Sarah Palin still has an audience, despite being unable to form a coherent sentence, and FOX trumps real news ratings? Videos of Democrats showing their teeth have gone viral on Youtube and online media outlets such as Huffington Post. Liberals are clamoring for more. Some politicians even have their own groupies. Proponents of health care reform have the added bonus of being factually superior. When the Fox News audience teabagged Washington on September 12th, they protested everything from abortion and Muslims to Nancy Pelosi's facial expressions and what one can only assume is President Obama's lack of toothbrush mustache. We both outnumber and outsmart opponents on this health care issue. Their guns might be louder but ours are more accurate. So why aren't progressives strutting their sexy in D.C. in order to demand real health care reform? Let's pick a date already and show them what a real protest looks like. Who knows, maybe single liberals will meet their match. (pun intended) |
