Yeah, Republicans, I’m talking to you, directly to you, without veiled allusions or vague references. I’ve heard from too many of you who are telling me that Obama lied right to our faces during his address to Congress because the proposed health plans will cover illegal immigrants.Well, the great thing about a blog is that you can't shout me down and call it exercising your rights to free speech at a town hall meeting. So here are the FACTS about the issue, something people like Glenn Beck and others at Faux News are normally not bothered with when conducting their “fair and balanced” reporting. The health plans currently circulating Congress, there are at least five different versions right now, including at least one that some members of both parties came up with together, specifically exclude illegal immigrants from taking advantage of this overhauled system. However, there are loopholes in the way that this overhaul “attaches” itself to the current system that could allow some, not all, but some illegal immigrants to get these benefits. I personally feel that these loopholes need closing, but that it is more important to get a health care system reformation in place. The “public option” isn’t socialized health care because it is a single payer, private service provider plan. That means that while the insurance company will be administrated by some government office, the doctors are still private practices. This means this part of the system will operate just like the current one. The only way it could possibly affect you is by dropping your insurance premiums to remain competitive with the new kid on the block. The “option” part of the name being thrown around is a little confusing, I know, but it means that people, for the most part, have a choice as to whether they want to use this option or not. I say for the most part because another part of most versions of the health plan state that if you don’t have insurance, you must get it. The reason behind this is that people in this country need health insurance. Those who don’t have it have a much higher mortality rate from preventable illness than those with the insurance. So the whole point of the this post, Republicans, is to point out that you have all this unfounded rage towards the President when he didn’t lie to you, but you found no outrage at all when we all found out that George Bush and Dick Cheney lied to us about why we needed to invade Iraq. It has been proven, time and again by both independent international and national groups that every reason given for that invasion was an outright lie and were known to be lies when they were given as excuses to start a conflict in the region that has been going on for almost 9 years and has killed hundreds of thousands of people. Healthcare for all American citizens shouldn’t be an option! It should be something we all gladly want to help accomplish. Where is you American spirit, Republicans? How is it unpatriotic to want to ensure that EVERY American has a healthy enough life to strive for the American dream? It seems to me that the Republican ideal of patriotism goes only as far as flag waving, parade marching and killing hundreds of thousands of people for no good reason, but when someone wants to add something as noble as taking care of all our citizens to that list, that’s just plain unacceptable. |
